The power of collective prayer in a sacred place
We invite you to join us in collecting prayers and aspirations that will be taken to three sacred sites in Nepal for a week of prayer by monks and nuns and members of the Gampopa Center. A butter lamp - a traditional Tibetan votive candle - will be lit at these sites as a light offering, for each prayer or aspiration gathered.
On Sunday, April 29, from 3:30pm to 5pm at the Gampopa Center we will launch the project of collecting these aspirations. Please join us to learn more about the project and how you can help. Pizza will be served!

About the project
According to the sutras, a light offering made to the Buddhas is a powerful way to create good karma. The Butter Lamps 2018 project provides the opportunity for people to make a donation for light offerings to be made for them at sacred sites in Nepal. Individuals can dedicate their light offerings to their or others' health, happiness, success and enlightenment, to the improvement of the environment, human rights, and family harmony, and to other positive causes.

Results of the project in 2017
In 2017, we collected more than 10,300 aspirations in Asia and America. During the pilgrimage we:

  • Offered a butter lamp for each aspiration across five sacred sites in India and Nepal, and engaged in a week of prayer at these sites with local monks and nuns

  • Offered robes and flowers to the Buddha at Mahabodhi, the temple commemorating the enlightenment of the Buddha

  • Offered food to 215 monks at Tergar Monastery in Bodhgaya and to 80 monks in Thrangu Rinpoche monastery in Varanasi

  • Supported the monks and nuns who joined us in prayer

  • Offered food to the homeless

Sponsoring light offerings
You can sponsor light offerings by making a donation on this page or at the Gampopa Center. Please note that the center isn't staffed all of the time, but there is generally someone around after each of the weekly Buddhist Studies classes who can help.
